The Mission
Before the Bookshelves is a place for readers who enjoy discovering stories that stay with them long after the final page.
Books are more than ratings, rankings, and summaries. They are experiences... stories that can surprise us, challenge our thinking, introduce us to new worlds, or simply give us a chance to escape for a while.
This site is about exploring those experiences through thoughtful reviews and conversations about the books that stand out. Whether it’s a science fiction adventure that expands our imagination, a thriller that keeps us guessing, a mystery that pulls us in, or a historical novel that brings another time to life, the focus is always on what makes a story worth reading.
The aim is simple: to share honest reactions, highlight great storytelling, and help readers discover books they may not have found otherwise.
Because every book starts with a first page, a first impression, and a chance to earn a place on the bookshelf.
R. Smith
Before the Bookshelves was born from a simple idea: that every book leaves something behind. A thought, a question, a feeling, or a moment that stays with you long after the final page.
I’m the reader behind Before the Bookshelves.
When I’m not turning pages, you'll usually find me coaching youth football, working in finance, or trying to keep up with the adventures of family life. Reading is my escape, my curiosity project, and the place where I can slow down for a while and lose myself in a great story.
I've always been fascinated by books that take me somewhere else. Whether it's exploring distant galaxies, uncovering hidden mysteries, stepping into the past, or spending time with characters who feel real enough to know, I've always loved stories that linger long after I've turned the final page.
Through Before the Bookshelves, I want to share more than a simple star rating or whether I liked a book. I want to capture what it actually felt like to read it... the moments that surprised me, the ideas that stayed with me, and the reasons a story might deserve a place on your own bookshelf.
Whether you're searching for your next great read, looking for an honest review, or simply enjoy talking about books, I'm glad you're here.
There's always room for another story.
