Every book starts long before the first page.
Sometimes it begins with a recommendation from a friend. Sometimes it's a striking cover that catches your eye in a bookshop. Sometimes it's an author you've trusted for years or a title you stumble across at exactly the right moment.
That's the space Before the Bookshelves is all about.

I'm a lifelong reader who's always chasing the next story worth getting lost in. My shelves are filled with science fiction, thrillers, horror, historical fiction, and the occasional book that refuses to fit neatly into any genre. I read widely, but I'm always searching for books that make me think, feel, surprise me, or simply keep me turning pages long after I should have gone to sleep.
Here you'll find honest, spoiler-conscious reviews of both new releases and forgotten gems. I receive advance review copies through NetGalley and publishers, borrow plenty from the library, and happily buy the books that earn a permanent place on my shelves. Whether a book arrives months before publication or has been gathering dust for years, I'll judge it the same way:
Did it tell a story worth reading?
I'm less interested in ticking boxes or handing out star ratings than exploring why a book worked or why it didn't. Was it unforgettable characters? Razor-sharp pacing? An ending that lingered for days? Or a brilliant idea that never quite reached its potential?
Those are the conversations I love, and they're the ones you'll find here.
But this blog isn't just about reviews.
It's about discovery.
It's about finding the book you didn't know you needed. Rediscovering an author you've overlooked. Taking a chance on a genre you've never explored. And occasionally being completely surprised by a novel that came out of nowhere.
If you've ever stood in front of a bookshelf wondering, "What should I read next?"... you're in the right place.
So grab a coffee, browse the shelves, and stay awhile.
Because every great reading journey begins Before the Bookshelves.
Thanks for being here.
